Heart Palpitations 心悸

Palpitations are heartbeat sensations that feel like pounding or racing. You may simply have an unpleasant awareness of your own heartbeat.

Palpitations are often not serious. However, it depends on whether or not the sensations represent an abnormal heart rhythm. You are more likely to have an abnormal heart rhythm if you have: a known heart problem; material risk factors for heart disease; an abnormal heart valve; or an electrolyte deficiency, e.g. low potassium levels.

Atherosclerosis 动脉粥样硬化

Atherosclerosis is a common disorder of the arteries. Fat, cholesterol and other substances accumulate in the walls of the arteries and form “atheromas” or plaque. Oxidation of these substances contribute to the accumulation.

Eventually, this fatty tissue can erode the wall of the artery, diminish its elasticity and interfere with blood flow. Plaques can also rupture/break off, causing debris to migrate downstream within an artery. This is a common cause of heart attack and stroke.

Clots can also form around the plaque deposits, further interfering with blood flow and posing additional danger if they break off and travel to the heart, lungs and brain. Many doctors now suspect that people with a high inflammation risk are at risk from atherosclerosis.

Risk factors for atherosclerosis include: smoking, high blood pressure, excessive dietary fats, poor blood cholesterol levels, diabetes, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, and kidney disease.

Applied nutrition

See “heart attack / stroke”. The theme is to reduce inflammatory risk, increase anti-oxidative nutritional intake, reduce fat and cholesterol and slowly increase exercise levels.

Heart Disease 心脏病

A heart attack occurs when an area of heart muscle dies or is permanently damaged because of inadequate oxygen supply.

A stroke or “brain attack” occurs when blood supply to the brain is interrupted and brain tissue dies. Victims can suffer from lifelong disabilities, speech difficulties, paralysis and even death.

Possible causes

Most heart attacks are caused by a blood clot that blocks one of the coronary arteries (blood vessels that bring blood and oxygen to the heart muscle). The clot usually forms in a coronary artery that has been narrowed due to atherosclerosis (inflammation and/or cholesterol buildup).

A clot in the coronary artery interrupts the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart muscle, leading to the death of heart cells in that area. The damaged heart muscle loses its ability to contract and the remaining heart muscle needs to work hard to compensate for that weakened area. This overwhelming stress can trigger a heart attack.

Risk factors for coronary artery disease and heart attack include: smoking, high blood pressure, excessive dietary fats, poor blood cholesterol levels, diabetes, being male, being over 40 and heredity.

In many cases, the pain may be subtle or even completely absent (silent heart attack), especially in the elderly and those with diabetes. Often the pain radiates from the chest to the arms, shoulders, neck, jaw, abdomen and back.

The pain typically lasts for over 20 minutes and is not fully relieved by rest. Other symptoms include: shortness of breath; coughing; dizziness; fainting; nausea/vomiting; sweating; and a feeling of impending doom.

Hair loss 掉头发

Hair loss is the thinning of hair on the scalp which normally occurs with age in both men and women, but is usually more pronounced in men.

Some men never go bald but everyone’s hair thins out over the years. Despite much research, there is little men can do to slow down or reverse hair loss since it is likely caused by make hormones and genetic constitution.

Acute environmental or psychological stress can result in sudden, rapid shedding of hair. Although losing clumps of hair is alarming, the body will often adjust itself and in most cases, the hair grows back.

Using natural wheat-germe based hair products can help hair follicles stay clean and promote healthy hair growth.

Gout 痛风

Gout is a kind of arthritis caused by excessive uric acid buildup in the joints. Uric acid is a substance that forms when the body breaks down a substance called purine. This substance normally dissolves in your blood and passes through the kidneys into urine. In people with gout, uric acid builds up and forms sharp crystals that can collect around the joints, causing excruciating pain.

Gout is often called a rich man’s disease since it is often associated with rich food and alcohol. In fact, it affects people from all walks of life, most commonly men between the ages of 40-50. It may be brought on by crash dieting, drinking, certain medication, overeating, stress, surgery or joint injury. Approximately 90% of the people who suffer from gout are male. Uric acid kidney stones may be a related problem

Gastritis 胃炎

Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the stomach lining. It means that white blood cells move into the stomach wall in response to some type of injury. Gastritis is not gastroenteritis and does not mean that there is a peptic ulcer or cancer. It is simply an inflammation – either acute or chronic.

Possible signs and symptoms

Nausea; abdominal bloating; vomiting (blood or coffee ground-like material); indigestion; hiccups; loss of appetite; black, tarry stool.

Possible causes

  • Irritation of the stomach lining due to alcohol use, chronic vomiting, stress or the use of certain medication such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Excessive bacteria (helicobacter pylori) in the mucus lining of the stomach. Without treatment, the infection can lead to ulcers and possibly stomach cancer.
  • Pernicious anaemia – a form of anaemia that occurs when the stomach lacks a naturally occurring substance needed to properly absorb and digest vitamin B12.
  • Bile reflux – a backflow of bile back into the stomach.
  • Infections caused by bacteria or viruses.
  • Other auto-immune disorders.

Food poisoning 食物中毒

Food poisoning is a common, usually mild but sometimes deadly illness. Typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping and diarrhoea that comes suddenly but within 48 hours of consuming contaminated food or drink. Depending on the contaminant, fever and chills, blood stool, dehydration and nervous system damage may follow. These symptoms may affect one person or a group of people who ate the same thing.

The causes of food poisoning can be divided into two types: infective agents and toxic agents. Infective agents include viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Food usually becomes contaminated with infective agents from poor sanitation, preparation and storage. Toxic agents include poison (e.g. poisonous mushrooms), improperly prepared exotic foods (e.g. fugu), or residual chemicals on fruits and vegetables.

Applied nutrition

Ensure that you clean your fruits and vegetables with a biodegradable wash. Reduce load on digestive system by reducing consumption of meats and other difficult-to-digest foods. Keep hydrated with purified water. Use royal jelly or active honey high on pantothenic acid as a soothing anti-inflammatory agent.”

Fatigue 疲倦

Fatigue is generally related to mental or physical tiredness following prolonged or intense mental or physical activity/stress. Conversely, a lack of adequate exercise can also cause fatigue. Inadequate nutritional or fluid intake may also contribute to fatigue. A diet rich in a multitude of vitamins and minerals is essential. Fatigue may also result from low iron intake, possibly anaemia. Iron is also required for a healthy immune system and for energy production. Prolonged fatigue may lead to other problems, such as depression.

Recent studies have shown that as many as 7 out of 10 pre-menopausal women do not get enough iron. Women, particularly during pregnancy, teenage girls, athletes and vegetarians are most likely to be at risk from inadequate iron intake.

Applied nutrition

Do more outdoor sports to increase circulation. Exposure to activity and sunshine lets the body produce endorphins which improve mood and break the vicious cycle of chronic fatigue.

Eye troubles 眼睛问题

A major cause of eye trouble is a poor diet. A deficiency in just one vitamin can lead to various eye problems. Include more fresh vegetables and fruit in the diet, especially more leafy greens and yellow/orange colored vegetables. Antioxidant supplementation will prevent cell damage by preventing the oxidation of fats and the formation of free radicals. Possible signs and symptoms Tired, burning, irritated eyes that may also be sensitive to light. Difficulty with night vision. Cataracts are related to the eye. Possible causes Eyes can be strained by intense close work, improper posture causing misalignment of neck vertebrae controlling nerve and blood flow to the eyes, inadequate light, air pollutants and poor nutrition. Applied nutrition If suffering from prolonged poor posture, long periods of sitting and office lighting, considering fixing those first. Get a better chair, keyboard rests/platforms; shade the lights to reduce contrast; and get a window seat to look out of the window at least once every 45 minutes. You only have one pair of eyes. Eczema 湿疹

Eczema is an itchy inflammation of the skin associated with other features such as redness of affected areas, generally dry skin, lumps or blisters and signs of superficial infections such as weeping or crusty deposits.

It is often difficult or impossible to determine the cause of eczema in any one person. It may arise and subside without warning. It may occur from contact with materials a person is allergic to, food allergies, air pollutant sensitivities and stress. It may also result from a yeast/fungal infection.

The itchiness associated with eczema is particularly uncomfortable. Reducing contact between that area and clothing is advised. Use high quality natural cotton or silk if that area needs to be clothed. Keep affected areas cool, aired and dry. Avoid hot showers and use a natural, dermatologist-tested, honey-based moisturiser for affected parts.
